This is my Family!
“We inherit from our ancestor's gifts so often taken for granted. Each of us contains within this inheritance of soul. We are links between the ages, containing past and present expectations, sacred memories and future promise.”
- Edward Sellner
I was recently reminded of how short life truly is when in September my uncle passed away unexpectedly. After his death, I began going through old family photos that I had taken over the years and realized how few images I actually had of my uncle and my extended family. My life is made up of taking photos. It's my job, my hobby. But, when it came to documenting my family, I hadn't taken the time to photograph the ones that meant the most to me. In February, I had the opportunity to travel to OH for a few days to visit my grandparents with my father.
I determined that I was going to be intentional about documenting my family. I wanted to tell their stories. I wanted to create photos that when people looked at the images they would get an appreciation of who my Papaw and Granny are. So, I spent time setting up different editorial portraits which were taken both inside and outside their small homestead in Greenfield, OH. This homestead is the place where so many of my childhood memories were based. I wanted to create something that I could one day show to my kids and grandkids so that they could know where they had come from.
It is because of the choices that Albert L. and Nancy Cox made throughout the years that I’m here. I now have an opportunity to create, to love, to fear and to dream, because this is where I have come from. This is who I am, and I’m proud to say that this is my family.
